Tintagel

Tintagel
The reputed conception-place of King Arthur.  According to Geoffrey, Uther Pendragon lusted after Igraine, wife of Gorlois Duke of Cornwall.  Gorlois garrisoned his wife at Tintagel, which was then a peninsula jutting out into the Irish Sea (it is now an island seperated from the mainland by a small isthmus.)  Uther, however, had Merlin change him into the form of Gorlois so that he could enter the castle and sleep with Igraine. While there is no way to say whether or not Arthur or his mother ever lived at Tintagel, there is evidence that the spot had been continuously inhabited from the time of the Roman occupation.
