So Hilary Clinton's campaign song is "You and I" by Celine Dion. Jeeze--it makes Fleetwood Mac look like Steppenwolf.
You know, I wasn't going to vote for her anyway, but man, this would've pushed me over the edge.
posted by Mary, 10:30 AMSo we live in Lansdale now, because let's face it--come the zombie apocalypse or peak oil, the last place you want to be is the city.
Whether you'd call Lansdale a suburb is up to debate, since it's an actual town from the 19th century, and not a post-WWII development. This means it has a certain amount of self-sufficiency, though in some ways it is a bedroom community for Philadelphia.
But it's a bit of a flashback after living in the city; I used to live out in Gilbertsville, which butts up against Berks county, so I used to live in a rural area. And what I didn't expect is that Lansdale is more connected to that--and to Lehigh county--than, say, Philadelphia. I mean, I was at the grocery store--a Redners, which you only find out in Berks county, or so I thought--and there were books on the Amish. Just Amish books and pop Christian books.
Anyway, so it's a little bit of a shock, having not lived out in this kind of place since I was sixteen.
I planted a vegetable garden; so one recent Sunday night, I was working in the garden, when a neighbor introduced me to her ex-husband. They asked our last name; I said "Lingg."
He laughed and said, "With a name like that, you should be short and slanty-eyed."
I was pretty much stunned into silence. I barely spluttered out a "It's Swiss German--" before I just shut up and turned to work in the garden again, namely because he was a big guy and I didn't want a fight.
Guess I've got some things to get used to again--like dealing with casual racism on a daily basis.
Oh fun.

End of May/beginning of June, my husband and I bought a house and moved, so things have been pretty chaotic around here. Hence the lack of updates or desire to even post--frankly, we're dead tired. But I'm just posting this to let you know I haven't dropped off the face of the earth. I've got a few new posts in the encyclopedia, and I'm editing a new text (and editing Old Irish is difficult, plus I have to figure out why the characters aren't the same in Firefox and Internet Explore).
