Mark of the Beast? Damn.

Tommy Thompson to get RFID tag: makes me feel all warm and tingly. Not that I'm an apocalypt nut, but the idea of implanting a microchip in my hand makes me sit up and take notice. Can't see this one going over well in the south.

However, the medical industry is pushing for it because the chip can carry life-saving information. Sure--but so can a bracelet. I'll stick with the latter.

Want it even creepier? "Researching RFID's Surveillance Potential": They call it the "Sorting Door" Hey kids! It's just like Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat! (No, I'm not kidding, they really make that comparison in the article.)

Meanwhile, "Wireless chips will track foreigners driving into and out of U.S.": These chips are only going into cars, however.

Gee, who needs a "RealID" card when we can all get fitted with computer chips? Don't have a chip? Sorry, no job, bank account, or home for you!

Santorum Wants to Take Your Birth Control Away

Santorum Says Birth Control Harms Women: Not shocked that he said it or thinks it, but frankly, it's a stupid position to take, even in Pennsylvania. 70% of the population is pro-birth control. Even my mother, a staunch Catholic, sees the practicality of birth control. (Of course, my mother was, until she retired, a working mom my entire childhood--another reason for me to hate Santorum.)

Keep shootin' yer mouth off, Ricky. Please.

Sorry for the Absence

My bosses have been riding me a lot lately, and combine that with my still-internet-less house... Well, you've seen the result. Tack on top of that this recurring illness I caught in Austria, and the ever-present depression...

Anyway, off my butt for at least this Friday entry, right? Right.

New MA in Celtic Studies

Courtesy of Owen Thomas, Lecturer at University of Wales, Lampeter:

I just wanted to let you and the readers of your website and blog that the University of Wales, Lampeter will be offering a new postgraduate online MA in Celtic Studies from October 2005 onwards. Students from around the world will be able to study online either full-time (one-year) or part-time (2-4 years) under the guidance of an experienced tutor without attending a campus. Residential courses will become available at a later date if there is sufficient demand but the principal idea is to give students an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of Celtic Studies before taking the plunge possibly into independent research (MPhil or PhD). Further details will become available at www.e-addysg.com (the home address of the Department of Welsh at the University of Wales, Lampeter and which also has a link to a free Welsh-English dictionary) or those interested could simply send an e-mail to the Head of Department, Dr Jane Cartwright (j.cartwright@lamp.ac.uk).

The Department of Welsh at Lampeter would like to publicise this unique postgraduate course more widely in North America and would greatly appreciate any contact details for institutions and/or individuals who would be interested in Celtic Studies.

So, if this interests you (and I assume there must be some it would, including myself), please check out the Welsh Department at UoW, Lampeter.
