The Only Thing We Have To Fear

Is apparently columnists who want another 9/11:

Remember the community of outrage and national resolve? America had not been so united since the first Day of Infamy - 12/7/41.

We knew who the enemy was then.

We knew who the enemy was shortly after 9/11.

[snip]

America's fabric is pulling apart like a cheap sweater.

What would sew us back together?

Another 9/11 attack.

The Golden Gate Bridge. Mount Rushmore. Chicago's Wrigley Field. The Philadelphia subway system. The U.S. is a target-rich environment for al Qaeda.

Is there any doubt they are planning to hit us again?

If it is to be, then let it be. It will take another attack on the homeland to quell the chattering of chipmunks and to restore America's righteous rage and singular purpose to prevail.

This is one of the sickest things I've read in a newspaper in a long time. "We're not united, so maybe if a bunch of us got killed and we're all scared, we'll be united and do whatever the government wants."

A lot of conservatives like to paint the War on Terror and the Iraq War as being like World War II--some of the more fatuous even go so far as to use the term "Islamofascism". But if this was WWII, you wouldn't hear people rhapsodizing about how we needed another Pearl Harbor. No--you heard FDR* saying the only thing to fear was fear itself. But what this jackass--in my own hometown tabloid no less--says is "9/11 was a good thing--we need more of them." More 9/11 = more "unity" which is really another way of saying "we need to suppress dissent."

If the only way to keep the country united is for people to attack us, then maybe the country isn't worth saving. Me, I'll be happy as part of the new nation of Eastern Pennsylvania. (No Steelers fans need apply). And we get South Jersey and it's farms and beaches, so take that, New York.

*Leave aside personal opinions about FDR
